Which Intel processor to choose?

Today in market we see most of the laptops and desktops labelled "Intel Core(?) inside". Actually, it is brand name used for various processor with Core architecture of Intel processors launched at January 2010. It is powerful than previous generation Pentium and Core 2 processors. Intel has been developing more and more powerful processors and in this trend Core iX is the latest processor. There are three variations in this lineup namely, Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7. While buying laptops labelled Intel Core Inside, be sure to investigate what you need is there. The comaprision table below shows brief overview of Intel Core processors.

Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology
Gives customers 4-way and 8-way multitask processing that allows each core of the processor to work on two tasks at the same time. “Hyper-threading enables today’s dual-core CPUs to perform at the capacity of yesterdays quad-core CPUs without increasing power consumption”. Now stop waiting your computer to catch up!

Intel® Smart Cache
The shared cache is dynamically allocated to each processor core, based on workload. It is optimized for dual-core processors to increase portability of data in cache. This implementation of fast cache significantly reduces latency to frequently used data and improves performance.

Intel® Turbo Boost Technology
Automatically speeds up the processor when the PC needs extra performance. No buttons to push, no complicated software setups required. “Turbo turns on automatically to provide performance when needed and turn off to save energy when not”

32nm Technology

Intel Core Microarchitecture 32nm Process Technology. 432nm81 square millimeterpacks 383 million transistors. Enables Faster Processors that consumes less energy. Smaller transistor technology enables more features to be build into the processor, and lowers power consumption.

Intel® HD Graphics

Stunning visual experience that delivers sharper images, richer color, adn lifelike audio and video with Intel® HD Graphics. Great for running mainstream/casual gaming and HD video playback. Enhanced video and 3D engine delivers smooth HD video playback and mainstream 3D gaming without need for add-in video cards. It features dynamic frequency which allows processor to automatically distribute performance between the processor and Intel integrated graphics based on application needs.

Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT)

Intel® Trusted Execution Technology for safer computing is a versatile set of hardware extensions to Intel® processors and chipsets that enhance the digital office platform with security capabilities such as measured launch and protected execution. Intel Trusted Execution Technology provides hardware-based mechanisms that help protect against software-based attacks and protects the confidentiality and integrity of data stored or created on the client PC. It does this by enabling an environment where applications can run within their own space, protected from all other software on the system. These capabilities provide the protection mechanisms, rooted in hardware, that are necessary to provide trust in the application's execution environment. In turn, this can help to protect vital data and processes from being compromised by malicious software running on the platform.

Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) for Directed I/O (Intel® VT-d)

Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) extends Intel's Virtualization Technology (VT) roadmap by providing hardware assists for virtualization solution. VT-d continues from the existing support for IA-32 (VT-x) and Itanium® processor (VT-i) virtualization adding new support for I/O-device virtualization. Intel VT-d can help end users improve security and reliability of the systems and also improve performance of I/O devices in virtualized environment. These inherently helps IT managers reduce the overall total cost of ownership by reducing potential down time and increasing productive throughput by better utilization of the data center resources.

I will post about 2nd generation Intel processors later in another post. Please do comment so that I can improve my contents.

Thank you.
